Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter (1607-1676), Dutch admiral who fought under Maarten Tromp in the first of the Dutch wars (1652-54), captured English holdings on the Gold and Guinea coasts in the second Dutch War (1664-67), and saved Dutch ports from attack by the English and French in the third Dutch War (1672-78).
